The winners have been announced: visit SMARTRISK’s Is It Worth It website to view the winning high school student videos aimed at discouraging distracted driving among youth. The top three student video public service announcements that tallied the most online votes over the month of April will now share in $5,000 in cash prizes. Special judges’ prizes for their three favourite videos were also awarded.
CN stresses trespassing risks during Rail Safety Week

CN is marking Rail Safety Week, April 30 – May 6, with a public awareness campaign stressing the deadly risks of trespassing on railway tracks and property. In 2011, there were 236 grade crossing and railway trespassing incidents in Canada, causing 70 deaths and 42 serious injuries, a CN news release reports. CN Police are rolling out a year-round initiative to reduce trespassing incidents, fatalities and injuries.

SMARTRISK has launched the Is It Worth It? campaign website. Led by No Regrets high schools Northern Secondary in Toronto and Leo Hayes in Fredericton and made possible with funding by State Farm, students came up with the campaign slogan and key messages: You’re not on the road, why is your car? and My Car, My Rules. High school students across Canada are invited to develop a public service announcement aimed at preventing distracted driving among their peers. Winners will share in more than $5,000 in prizes. Ontario Injury Data Report released

The Ontario Injury Prevention Resource Centre, housed at SMARTRISK, released its Ontario Injury Data Report on March 22, a detailed snapshot of injury in the province. Nearly two years in the making, the report covering emergency department visits, hospitalizations and deaths by injury, has been greeted with great interest by health units and media outlets. Federal government invests in SNOWSMART

Funded by the Government of Canada, SMARTRISK is partnering with the Canadian Ski Patrol System and the Canadian Snowboard Federation on a new SNOWSMART project to help children and youth reduce their risks of injury on ski hills. The Minister of State for Sport, Bal Gosal, announced the government support on March 20 at Blue Mountain in Collingwood, Ont.
State Farm to help “Cause An Effect”

State Farm, a major sponsor of SMARTRISK, is inviting people to submit ideas to “Cause An Effect” of positive change in their neighbourhoods in the areas of education, safety or community development. From Feb. 29 through March 20, 2012, people in the United States and Canada are encouraged to visit State Farm’s Facebook page to submit a cause, for a chance to win one of 40 $25,000 grants.
SMARTRISK becomes part of new voice in injury prevention

SMARTRISK, a long time leader in the promotion of safety and injury prevention in Canada, is pleased to announce it is merging with Safe Communities Canada, Safe Kids Canada and ThinkFirst Canada. Together, we are creating a new single organization with a national mandate to address injury prevention among Canadians. This organization should become operational in the summer of 2012.

Ned Levitt presented for the injury prevention roadshow, SMARTRISK No Regrets Live at his daughters’ former high school this week. SMARTRISK Board chairman Mr. Levitt has a deeply personal reason for his involvement with the national charity, as he lost his 18-year-old daughter Stacey when, while out jogging listening to music over headphones, she stepped into the path of a car and was killed. Several media outlets covered Mr. Levitt’s story, as he was speaking just after a new U.S. study revealed reports of serious injuries and deaths suffered by pedestrians wearing headphones tripled over seven years.
